Community Opportunities for Recreation and Enrichment
The Community Opportunities for Recreation and Enrichment (C.O.R.E.) program brings adults with developmental disabilities to Howard Community College to participate in a program which provides a learning plan that addresses the interests and needs of the individuals as well as a nurturing environment in which the adults can participate with other members of the college community. Students in the C.O.R.E. participate in activities that increase self-esteem and enhance skills that are needed to increase independence, participate in community experiences to enhance independent living experiences, and participate in health and wellness which promote fitness and healthy lifestyle.
Individuals’ participation in the broad range of activities provide opportunities to continually develop and use skills learned in a variety of community settings. Community participation is not just restricted to campus activities. Although students participate in activities on all parts of the campus, students also enjoy going to plays, movies, bowling, miniature golf, the mall, and to restaurants. Students also participate in a series of classes that focus on a variety of independent living skills. These classes include Money Management, Reading Using the Newspaper, Introduction to Spanish Language and Culture, Communication, Social Skills, Self-advocacy/Self-determination, and nutrition and healthy lifestyle. The skills learned in these classes are reinforced throughout the year.
Objectives of the program are to:
develop increased self-esteem through structured, community-based programming by increasing the participation of adults with developmental disabilities in campus and community activities.
participate at least three hours per week in fitness activities.
demonstrate an understanding of the importance of fitness and healthy food choices for better health and wellness.
develop and use social skills, advocacy skills, and appropriate communication skills
demonstrate an understanding of community life.
engage in social activities in which friendships may be made and sustained.
An added benefit is that families are able to use the C.O.R.E. program for respite purposes and be confident that their family member is engaged in socially appropriate community-based activities with trained staff.
