  • You must be 16 years of age or older and officially withdrawn from school to be eligible for our classes.
  • REGISTER EARLY! Class size is limited; openings for qualified students are first-come, first-served.
  • Howard Community College's Continuing Education Refund Policy does not apply to Adult Basic Skills Enhancement Classes. Information will be given at required registration sessions.
  • Our Adult Basic Skills courses are funded in part by a grant from the Maryland Department of Labor and Licensing Regulation (DLLR).

Attend an Orientation/Registration session and complete assessment testing prior to registering for any of the following courses:

  • Adult Basic Education (ABE)
  • GED® Exam Preparation
  • Math Skills Review

Course Descriptions 

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA COURSES

 

Advanced Language Arts

  • This advanced course provides instruction in analyzing and interpreting content -based texts and constructing evidence-based writing for students preparing for the GED® Test-Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Science, and Social Studies.
  • Eligibility requirements apply.
  • Placement testing is given at the Hickory Ridge Building.
  • $100 tuition required at registration (includes $90 in fees). Fees are non-refundable.

Advanced Math

  • This advanced course provides instruction in algebra and geometry for students preparing for the GED® Test-Mathematical Reasoning.
  • Eligibility requirements apply. 
  • Placement testing is given at the Hickory Ridge Building.
  • $100 tuition required at registration (includes $90 in fees). Fees are non-refundable.

GED® Exam Review

  • This is the administration of GED Ready™ (the official GED® practice test).
  • The testing environment is similar to the actual GED® exam.
  • Register online via www.HCCExpress.net or
  • To Register in person, first visit www.howardcc.edu/coned then:
    • Click on "Registration and Payment"
    • then click on "Registration Form" to download and print a Registration Form.

The cost is $25, required at registration.

You must be at the test site by 9:30 a.m.  No late admittance.

National External Diploma Program (NEDP)

  • This is an alternative program for adults 18 years old or over who:
      ♦ Have a job or who can demonstrate a job skill (such as homecare skills or home maintenance).
      ♦ Want to earn a Maryland High School diploma.
  • Placement Testing is required for entrance to this program.
  • If you meet the eligibility requirements and test into the program, there is a program fee of $200 (includes $100 in fees; fees are non-refundable)

Adult Basic Education

  • These courses provide instruction in critical reading and writing skills.
  • A placement test at the Hickory Ridge Building is required.

Grammar For Your Job

  • This course reviews and reinforces common principles of English usage and improves your ability to communicate effectively.
  • This course is also offered for college credit.
  • Required textbook to be purchased at HCC Bookstore prior to first class; please bring textbook to the first class.

RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS

Tutoring

  • If you are enrolled in a Fall 2014 or Winter 2015 Adult Basic Skills class or program, you are eligible for tutoring services.
  • A tutor will work with students on a one-on-one basis to reinforce reading, writing, and math skills.
  • Space is limited; appointments are made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

CORE (Community Opportunities in Recreation and Enrichment)

The CORE (Community Opportunities for Recreation and Enrichment) program at HCC is a program for adults with developmental disabilities to promote the development of skills that enable individuals to integrate into and participate in community activities. The program, located on the campus of Howard Community College’s Hickory Ridge Building, operates year-round from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students experience opportunities for learning that address their interests and needs as well as offering an age-appropriate, nurturing environment in which the adults can participate with other members of the college and in the community at-large.
