  • You must be 16 years of age or older and officially withdrawn from school to be eligible for our classes.
  • REGISTER EARLY! Class size is limited; openings for qualified students are first-come, first-served.
  • Howard Community College's Continuing Education Refund Policy does not apply to Adult Basic Skills Enhancement Classes. Information will be given at required registration sessions.
  • Our Adult Basic Skills courses are funded in part by a grant from the Maryland Department of Labor and Licensing Regulation (DLLR).

Attend an Orientation/Registration session and complete assessment testing prior to registering for any of the following courses:

  • GED Exam Preparation
  • Math Skills Review

ADULT BASIC SKILLS ENHANCEMENT COURSES

Adult Basic Education

Do you need to improve your basic skills?

  • This course provides reading, writing and math instruction for adults.
  • A placement test at the Hickory Ridge Building is required.

  • Free tuition; $50 resource fee required at registration. Fees are non-refundable.

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRAMS

GED® Exam Preparation

  • This review course prepares you for the Official GED® Test so that you can earn a Maryland High School diploma.
  • Specific scores must be achieved on a placement test given at the Hickory Ridge Building to qualify for this course.
  • See registration dates and times.
  • $180 tuition required at registration (includes $40 materials fee). Fees are non-refundable.

GED® Prep: Math

  • This review course prepares you for the GED® mathematics test so that you can earn a Maryland High School diploma.

GED
® Prep: RLA, Science & Social Studies

  • This review course prepares you for the GED® Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Science and Social Studies tests so that you can earn a Maryland High School diplooma.
  • Eligibility requirments apply.
  • Placement testing is given at the Hickory Ridge Building.
  • $100 tuition required at registration (includes $90 in fees). Fees are non-refundable.

GED® Exam Review

  • This is the administration of the Official GED Practice Test.
  • The test is half the length of the Official GED Test and provides a score that indicates your readiness.
  • The test is scored on site the day it is given.
  • Register online via www.HCCExpress.net or
  • To Register in person, first visit www.howardcc.edu/coned then:
    • Click on "Registration and Payment"
    • then click on "Registration Form" to download and print a Registration Form.

The cost is $25, required at registration.

You must be at the test site by 9:30 a.m.  No late admittance.

National External Diploma Program (NEDP)

This is an alternative program for adults 18 years old or over who:

  • Have a job or who can demonstrate a job skill (such as homecare skills or home maintenance).
  • Want to earn a Maryland High School diploma.
  • Placement Testing is required for entrance to this program.
  • If you meet the eligibility requirements and test into the program, there is a program fee of $200 (includes $100 in fees; fees are non-refundable)

Math Skills Review

Are you working toward a high school diploma?

Do you need to improve your math skills or want to assist your children with their homework?

  • This course provides a review of math operations.
  • Topics include a review of whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percents.
  • A placement test at the Hickory Ridge Building is required.

Basic Pre-Algebra and Geometry

Would you like to learn the basic principles of pre-algebra and geometry to help meet your educational goals, to prepare for tests, or for your own personal use?

  • This course will cover signed numbers, one and two step equations, angles, triangles, Pythagorean Relationship, and solid geometry.
  • Course requirement: You must have a basic knowledge of fractions, decimals, and percents to enroll.

Preparation for the Math Placement Test

This course is a partnership between Howard Community College's Division of Continuing Education and HCC Credit Math Department.

This course is recommended for those who wish to improve their chances of being placed into a high level math course.

  • The course offers an overview of arithmetic, basic math functions, elementary algebra, geometry, and college math.
  • Requirement: You must have basic knowledge of fractions, decimals and percents to enroll.

Preparation for the Math Placement Test Online
  • This online course prepares students to take the math placement test at Howard Community College.
  • The course can also help those who have taken the placement test try to raise their score.
  • Course materials will be available online at a dedicated course website and the instructor will communicate with students via email.

Tutoring

  • If you are enrolled in a Winter 2014 ABE, GED class or NEDP, you are eligible for tutoring services.
  • A tutor will work with students on a one-on-one basis to reinforce reading, writing, and math skills.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES


CORE (Community Opportunities in Recreation and Enrichment)

The CORE (Community Opportunities for Recreation and Enrichment) program at HCC is a program for adults with developmental disabilities to promote the development of skills that enable individuals to integrate into and participate in community activities. The program, located on the campus of Howard Community College’s Hickory Ridge Building, operates year-round from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students experience opportunities for learning that address their interests and needs as well as offering an age-appropriate, nurturing environment in which the adults can participate with other members of the college and in the community at-large.
