Community English Pre-Beginning A/B
This class teaches life skills and focuses on listening and speaking skills.  Some reading, writing, and grammar skills will also be taught.  This is a practical, pre-beginning class for people who speak no English.  Free tuition; material fees collected during registration.

Reading and Writing Literacy 1A/1B
This beginning class focuses on literacy level reading and writing.  This class is meant for students who speak some English but do not read and write.  Students with limited education in their first language or who come from a language system with a different alphabet would benefit from this class.  Learn to write letters, spelling, sounds in English, and sight words.  63 hours.  Free tuition; material fees collected during registration.

Writing Basics 1B *NEW*
This is special class for students who already know the alphabet and sounds in English but need practice with spelling, punctuation, filling out forms, and writing short phrases and sentences.  For help with the literacy, see the class above.  This class is not for literacy students; it is for students who are beginning level in all skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) but want extra practice with writing. 56 hours.  Free tuition; material fees collected during registration.

A completely different kind of class!  It’s more like private tutoring!  You will check out a DVD and a workbook to use for home study.  Once a week, you will return for a computer assessment (about 15-20 minutes) and an individual appointment (about 15-20 minutes) to work with a teacher who will review your homework and give you your next assignment.  Free tuition; material fees collected during registration.  Refundable deposit for DVD due on the first day of class.

Life in the USA

Using English in the Community (Int II & Adv I)
Upper-level intermediate or advanced students will have a chance to speak with native speakers as they perform volunteer service with reputable community organizations.  In class, you and other students will reflect on your experiences, using English for reading, writing, listening and speaking activities.  Outside speakers and videos will broaden your exposure to English.  Must be willing to commit to regular, weekly hours off-campus (minimum 3-4 hours/week).  26 in-class hours and approximately 30 out-of-class hours.  $210 (Books Included).  Course# YE-710.

Effective Academic Writing
