General Information:

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers community-based classes, intensive classes, and business classes, and online classes. Click here to find out which is right for you. Click here for Registration, placement, and testing Information.  All ESL classes will be held in Hickory Ridge and Duncan Hall buildings at Howard Community college campus.

College will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day and Friday, July 3 for Independence Day  (observed).

Improve all of your English skills in one intensive class: listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, and grammar. The curriculum in all of the classes is academic and challenging yet very practical. These classes are perfect for you if you are preparing for college study or need better English skills for your job or personal use. Content and complexity increase with each level. Idioms and Vocabulary for Conversation Classes
Idioms are words or phrases that cannot be translated exactly such as “go out on a limb" and “easy as pie.” These phrases are used frequently in conversations between Americans, on TV, on the radio, and in newspapers, but they can be very confusing for English learners.  In this interactive class, you will learn commonly used vocabulary and American idioms while you improve your speaking skills.  You will practice new vocabulary in pronunciation, spelling, reading, and conversation activities.  Content and complexity increase with each level. Conversation Classes
Learn to use correct spoken English in everyday conversations in these four-day-a-week intensive classes.  Develop confidence while you practice speaking in an active, fun environment. Improve your pronunciation and expand vocabulary daily by learning and using new words and expressions. You will practice new vocabulary through repetition, group and pair work, and pronunciation exercises.  Content and complexity increase with each level.  Book(s) are included in the course cost.

Spelling for Success *NEW*
Spelling in English is not easy.  However, there are rules and patterns that can help you spell and pronounce new words.  Have fun while you practice and learn!  You’ll get better at hearing the sounds of English and spelling new words correctly. $200. Course#YE-579.

Writing classes
Writing is critical to your future success! Improve writing for your personal use, GED, college studies, or the demands of your job in these classes.  Learn sentence writing, paragraph writing, new vocabulary, and grammar.  You’ll find that writing can be fun, interactive and educational.  Content and complexity increase with each level. Prior typing and computer skills are required, especially at level 3 and above.  These courses will include grammar; however, please consider the Summer I Grammar for Writing courses if grammar is difficult for you!  Book(s) are included in the course cost.

Professional Writing *Business & Professional certificate*
This advanced-level ESL writing course will prepare professionals for business/professional writing.  Work on various types of professional writing such as e-mail correspondence, memos, short reports, summaries, business letters, cover letters, and resumes.  Vocabulary and grammar will be covered as well.  Basic computer skills are required. $250. Online Pronunciation Class
Students can register for online classes in person or electronically. For online registration, please email us at elc@howardcc.edu or call 443-518-4646 for instructions.  If you are in an online class, your instructor will contact you with details about how to begin the class and how to purchase the textbook if required. Six Steps to Clearer Pronunciation (Levels 4 & higher)
Practice pronunciation in the comfort of your own home, anywhere in the world!  Your HCC ELC instructor will guide you through six detailed video lessons, with exercises to practice on your own.  Videotape yourself with easy-to-use technology, and your instructor will respond privately to you with feedback and suggestions.  A webcam with a microphone is required! $135.
