Spring & Summer 2015 ACT, SAT Preparation & Math Placement Test Courses

SAT PreparationThe following SAT Preparation and Math Placement Test courses are available this spring and summer.

ACT 


Preparation for the ACT
If you are planning to take the ACT test this academic year, this course will prepare you for both the language arts and the quantitative math and science sections. Topics will include review of language, reading, comprehension, punctuation and grammar in the language arts section. Topics in the math and science include earth and physical science, chemistry, biology and math, covering basic math through trigonometry. Practice tests will be taken and drills will be assigned as well as discussion of test taking strategies. Parents or guardians of students under 16 years of age will be required to complete a consent form that will be given to these students on the first day of class. Textbook is provided. You must bring a calculator. Limited enrollment. $315 (includes $70 in fees*)

Preparation for the ACT Test: Language Arts
This course will concentrate on preparing students for success on the English, reading, and writing tests of the ACT. Topics will include a review of punctuation and grammar, language and reading comprehension. Emphasis will be on determining main idea, drawing inferences, locating and interpreting significant details, analyizing various literary relationships, determining meaning from context clues, and understanding the author’s role in writing text. In addition, students will learn about the components of effective writing and developing arguments. Opportunities to practice writing individual essays will be given. Homework will be assigned and practice tests given. Textbook is provided. $185 (includes $65 in fees*)

Prep for the ACT Test: Quantitative Math and Science
This course will concentrate on preparing students for success on the math and science tests of the ACT. Topics will include a review of content presented in earth science, physical science, chemistry, and biology through analyzing data representations and relationships; developing and interpreting research summaries based on experiment reports; and analyzing conflicting viewpoints. Math preparation will consist of reviewing and practicing various math concepts contained in basic math, prealgebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry and trigonometry. Practice tests and homework will be assigned. Textbook is provided. You must bring a calculator. $185 (includes $65 in fees*)

Preparation for the SAT

Verbal preparation includes improving vocabulary, essay writing, and reading comprehension. Math preparation includes basic math through Algebra II. Students should have taken geometry. Test taking tips will be covered. The class simulates a test-taking environment with practice tests and exercises. Parents or guardians of students under 16 years of age will be required to complete a consent form that will be given to these students on the first day of class. Textbook is provided. Preparation for the SAT Math Test: Advanced

If you are retaking the SAT this academic year and want to improve your math score or if you have already taken the Preparation for the SAT Math Test class and you are proficient with your math skills through algebra II, you should take this course. Students will focus on the more difficult problems including solid and coordinate geometry, polynomials, probability, word problems, and logic reasoning. Tricks and strategies for solving difficult problems will also be included. Textbook is provided. Bring calculator to class. 1 week $180 (includes $70 in fees*)

Math Placement

Preparation for Math Placement Test 

This course is a partnership between Howard Community College’s Division of Continuing Education and the HCC Credit Math Department. This course is recommended for those who wish to improve their chances of being placed into a higher level credit math course. The course provides a review of arithmetic, basic math functions, elementary algebra, geometry, and college math. Basic knowledge of fractions, decimals, and percents is required. $155 (includes $90 in fees*)
