New Maryland State Requirements for Child Care Center Staff
The child care certification courses offered at Hickory Ridge have been revised and updated, with added topics to address new state requirements effective July 1, 2008. Child Care Certification I and Child Care certifiction II satisfy the MSDE requirement for 90 hours of child care training plus 9 hours of communication skills training.

HCC Scholarshipsfor Child Care Training
Funds from the HCC Educational Foundation, Inc. may be available to provide scholarships for credit and noncredit child care training. The grant program, funded by U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development and administered by the Howard County Office of Housing and Community Development, provides scholarships and coursework to eligible Howard County residents. Courses targeted for scholarships include the 90-hour Child Care Certification, the 45-hour Infant/Toddler program for senior staff, and the 45-hour School-Age program for group leaders offered in credit and noncredit options. Other options available for scholarships include noncredit 24-hour Family Child Care Provider certification, CDA prep, MMSR, and selected early childhood education credit courses beyond certification requirements. Howard County residents may apply for a variety of options and formats according to their individual career goals. For a brochure and application, call 410-772-4049. Scholarships apply only to courses held at HCC’s Hickory Ridge location and cosponsored classes at HCCCRC.

Maryland Scholarshipsfor Child Care Certification 
Funds for scholarships may be available from the Maryland State Department of Education, Early Childhood Development-Office of Child Care for credit and noncredit child care training, to eligible Maryland residents who are current or potential child care providers. The funds are for coursework and textbooks for the 90-hour Child Care Certification and the 45-hour Infant/Toddler program for senior staff, offered in credit and noncredit options. Child Care Certification I: Growth and Development
Gain a broad overview of the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of the child from birth to age 13, and build communication skills to use with parents, coworkers and the public. This certification course satisfies half of the MSDE requirement of 90 hours for child care teachers and directors, and also satisfies the 9-hour Communication Skills requirement. This course and a 45-hour course in age-appropriate curriculum (infant/toddler, preschool or school-age) are required to complete the 90-hour certification for child care. You must attend all class hours and successfully complete class assignments to receive a course certificate. Purchase textbook from HCC bookstore prior to class. (T) 5.4 CEUs. $225 (includes $15 materials fee*)

Child Care Certification II: Curriculum
Discover why play is a child's work! Examine curriculum materials and teaching methods that stimulate children from birth to age 6 and build communication skills to use with parents, co-workers and the public. This certification course satisfies half of the MSDE requirement of 90 hours for child care teachers and directors working with preschoolers, and also satisfies the 9-hour Communication Skills requirement. This course and Child Care Certification I are required to complete the 90-hour child care certification. The Role of the Administrator in Early Childhood Programs
This course is the fourth in the series of requirements for completing the Continuing Education Certificate in Early Childhood Program Management. It is designed for current and prospective owners/operators. This course will examine the varying duties and responsibilities required of program administrators in implementing quality programs for children and families. Topics will include: the state of directorship, developing leadership styles, managing and supervising the program and licensing regulations specific to administrative responsibilities of the operator and related sections. Other areas covered are: decision making, working with boards and community partners, time management, and professionalism. Prerequisites: Introduction to the Business of Early Childhood Programs and Planning and Developing Early Childhood Programs. Same text as ZB 632. (T) 1.2 CEUs. $115

Child Care Administration
This course prepares prospective directors to administer and manage a child care center. Topics include state requirements and compliance standards for physical facilities, licensing, insurance, and staffing child care programs. Other topics include recordkeeping, budget and bookkeeping, personnel selection, training and managing staff, food services, equipment, materials, and community involvement. This certification course satisfies the MSDE requirement for 45 hours of administrative training for child care center directors. Emergency Preparedness Training for Child Care Providers
This course prepares child care center staff, family child care providers, and informal providers to provide for the safety and security of children in care during emergency situations. Successful course completion requires submission of a written emergency plan for a center program, individual classroom, family child care program, or informal care program. Topics include environmental, medical, and technological emergencies, family/community threat or violence, essential components of an emergency plan, and strategies to address the unique needs of children during emergency situations. .6 CEUs. $15
